Did you know Kernow are a UK stockist of PMUC certified products?
PMUC approved products are stipulated for EDF Nuclear projects, but what exactly are they and when are they required?
What are PMUC certified products?
PMUC stands for ‘Produits et Matériaux Utilisables en Centrales’, or in other words, products
& materials for use in power plants.
A PMUC is an EDF issued certification given to specific products guaranteeing that they are safe, of satisfactory quality and therefore approved for use on its nuclear power plants. There are different categories of PMUC products set by EDF that are often used in the maintenance, control, or for general operating activities in nuclear power plants. These include products such as cutting discs, marker pens and various chemicals.
PMUC products must be non-metallic to help prevent risk of corrosion and ensure the smooth running of power plants. To gain PMUC certification, the prospective products will go through stringent tests in EDF’s own laboratories, ensuring they are free from lead, mercury, arsenic, antimony, copper, etc. They will also assess the halogen & sulphur content, ensuring they are within strict limits.
Why are PMUC approved products required on Nuclear Sites?
Corrosion to any part of a nuclear plants’ circuits (system of pipes and
tanks which carry water to and from the reactor, steam generator and condenser), or any other areas exposed to cooling water, is a serious risk and must be prevented at all costs.
PMUC certification ensures products contain minimal or no impurities that could either lead to, or potentially cause corrosion when used in direct contact with any metallic materials. As a result, PMUC certified products are mandatory when conducting works in these areas.
Traceability
Full traceability is an essential part of PMUC approved products, so they are all supplied with a certificate confirming the their chemical compliance, expiry date and batch number.
