Supporting Hinkley Point C Power Station Development
Posted on 08-03-2022
The immense Hinkley Point C Power Station development is currently one of the largest and most complex projects in Europe and Kernow are very proud to be a part of the supply chain.
Hinkley Point C (HPC), located in Somerset, is the first new nuclear power station to be built in the UK for over 20 years. On completion it will provide low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes. The electricity generated by its two EPR reactors will offset 9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year, or 600 million tonnes over its 60-year lifespan.
Delivering to Hinkley Point C since 2016
Kernow have been supplying HPC with a wide range of products and solutions since early 2016. Having been involved from the early stages we’re accustomed to dealing with the secure and controlled logistical requirements on-site. We work closely and proactively with HPC’s Delivery Management System and use our own vehicles and drivers to fulfil orders quickly and accurately. Our mission is to ensure everything runs smoothly, right through to completion.
"Kernow have served us well at Hinkley Point C, which has been greatly appreciated. We wouldn’t hesitate in recommending them as a competitive and reliable supplier, who go the extra mile and are a pleasure to deal with”. HPC Tier 1 Main Contractor.
We work with several of the Tier One Contractors & their subcontractors supplying fixings, bracketry, containment, tools and site consumables & equipment, as well as providing designs, load calculations and other technical support. This includes support at the design stage for the M&E installation on the HBS Building, a state of the art simulator training centre that will allow EDF Energy’s operatives to learn how to control and maintain nuclear reactors in a virtual environment. In addition, Kernow have supplied projects that support HPC, such as the new Accommodation Block and various infrastructure developments.
Full Unistrut Range for Next Day Delivery
HPC specifies that all channel & cable supports and bracketry required for the project must be genuine Unistrut product. As the largest supplier of Unistrut in the South West (and largest distributor of channel in the UK), we have been able to support contractors with this requirement - supplying what they need, when they need it. We stock a huge range of Unistrut products including channel, cable tray, pipe clips, nuts, bolts and a great deal more - ready for next day delivery to HPC.
The Mechanical and Electrical Phase
The MEH phase of the Hinkley Point C project has now been given the go ahead, and will involve electrical and mechanical installations requiring 380km of pipework and 9000km of cabling!
Kernow is on-hand to support and supply existing and new customers who are appointed to carry out mechanical, electrical and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (MEH) installation work across site.
It is a great privilege to be a part of such a large-scale infrastructure project and we look forward serving HPC right up to its proposed completion date of 2026.
